I gained the confidence to re-establish my career

-

Charles Greene has successfully found employment with Disclosure Scotland after being supported by Remploy, the disability employment specialists on the new Fair Start Scotland service.

Born in Dublin, Ireland, Charles moved to Scotland to broaden his employment opportunities and prospects.

He has lived in Rutherglen since 2002 and has had a varied work history since moving to Scotland.

Charles, 60, has a background in gardening, building and retail, but his gardening work led to a degenerative back condition which makes it difficult for him to stand or sit for too long.

He said:“my mobility has been heavily affected and my back condition has forced me to resign from previous jobs. I decided to make a start with Remploy on the new Fair Start service and I haven’t looked back. The overall experience of the service was great.”

Charles spent six months out of work and decided to optimise his chances of gaining employment by using Remploy’s online service which helped him with interview skills and re-writing his CV.

He said:“the feedback I get is always constructive and having the opportunity to speak to an advisor whenever I need to is great.”

On top of using the online service, Charles also visits his advisor in branch on a weekly basis. Sharon Wilson, Key Worker at Remploy said:“charles is a great participant and I am always on the lookout for jobs tailored to his skills. With double the support in place we were confident Charles would find the right job and I am delighted he was successful with Disclosure Scotland.”

Charles said:“the overall support that I have received from joining the Fair Start Service is immense. It has really helped me to maintain a more positive attitude and re-established my working career.”

Under Universal Credit a broader span of claimants are required to look for work than under Jobseeker’s Allowance.

As Universal Credit Full Service is rolled out in particular areas, the number of people recorded as being on the Claimant Count is therefore likely to rise.
