Mcstay double helps set up clash withtalbot
...... 3 Petershill ............ 1 Lesmahagow turned in a superb performance last Wednesday night to beat Petershill and reach the West Sectional League Cup final for the first time since 1994.
They will face Premiership side Auchinleck Talbot in the final after a Jon Mcstay double and Scott Falconer’s first -half strike sunk the Glasgow side.
Delighted manager Robert Irving said: “It was a brilliant display. The best I’ve seen Lesmahagow play for several years.
“We fielded our usual 3-5-2 formation, but the boys were brilliant — they all put in a lot of hard work to convincingly.”
Irving added: “We started in top gear and dominated the first half, taking a 3-0 half-time lead, and held on to that advantage.”
Kyle Weir’s 25th-minute corner was headed across goal by Falconer for Mcstay to nod into the net.
Two minutes later, Weir’s free kick was hammered home by Falconer, and on the half-hour Mcstay latched on to a Stevie Clark pass and beat a defender and the goalkeeper to slot home.
Ryan Deas’ late penalty was not enough to spark a Petershill revival.
Irving added: “No date has yet been fixed for the final, which I understand will be on a neutral ground.
“I don’t really mind where, but it will be a major tie against a top Premiership side.” make the final
