Relief as Gillespie lands cup at last
Larkhall pool ace Scott Gillespie was relieved to win the Scottish Pool Association’s Mick Mcgoldrick Individual Membership competition in Paisley following an unusually barren year.
The 32-year-old, who represented Motherwell District Pool League, made it through a field of 256 of Scotland’s top players to claim an 8-6 final victory against Scotland No.1 and ex-snooker professional Mark Boyle.
That marked a welcome return to winning ways for the former Scottish champion who pocketed a cool £1000 as his reward.
Scott said:“it’s a big, big relief to win it as last year was the first time in about 10 years that I hadn’t won at least one in a season.
“This was the fourth event this year and there are only five in a season, so I was starting to wonder when my win would be.
“It was a massive win for me, especially being down 5-1 in the last 16 against Keith Robertson and coming back to win 6-5. Then I beat Ryan Fleming 7-5 in the last eight followed by a 7-2 victory over Alan Reynolds in the semi-final.
“The final was how it should have been according to the rankings. Me as No.1 against Mark Boyle who was No.2.
And I ran out an 8-6 winner, collecting the £1000 prize money – I’m absolutely over the moon.”
The Individual Membership is a series of national pool competitions.
