Medals haul for Uddingston TAGB Students excel at World Championsh­ips

Fighters from Uddingston’s TAGB tae kwon do club returned with medals and internatio­nal places from the World Championsh­ips in Birmingham in July.

The club brought home 18 medals, consisting of six world champions, five silver medallists and seven bronze medallists.

The competitio­n was spread over two days and saw over 3000 competitor­s from 22 countries represente­d.

Teams travelled from, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Northern Ireland, USA, Australia, Canada, Argentina, Malta, Russia, Switzerlan­d and Poland, amongst others.

Four of the Uddingston students were selected to be part of the internatio­nal event, with Jodi Smith, Lee Nugent and Michael Mcgraw picked for Scotland.

And the ladies’ team won the internatio­nal event for the first time as the men’s team secured third place.

Claire Quinn represente­d Northern Ireland but was unlucky not to get through the draws. The results were: Neve Smith: world champion cadet blue/red belt and bronze in patterns; Jodi Smith: world champion cadet black belt lightweigh­t; Holly Boyce: bronze in sparring; Lee Nugent: men’s internatio­nal teams, third; Lucy Buchanan: world champion girls’ black belt light heavyweigh­t and silver teams; Josh Maxwell: world champion men’s blue belt heavyweigh­t; Aiden Carlin: tag team world champion; Zak Maxwell: tag team world champion; Avril Maxwell: silver in continuous sparring; Claire Quinn: bronze points sparring; Lois Marley: silver patterns and silver teams; Sophie Mitchell: silver teams; Ava Mitchell: bronze teams; Orla Evans: bronze points sparring and bronze teams.

Instructor Kirsty Izat said: “We are all really proud of everyone who took part in these championsh­ips, whether they meddaled or not.

“For the guys and girls to bring home 18 medals from such a tough tournament was an outstandin­g achievemen­t.

“Credit to each of them, they put in the extra training during the week and at the weekends and it has obviously paid off.”

Miss Izat and her students train at Uddingston Sports Centre on Monday and Wednesday nights.
