Scott Mcmann reckons Hamilton shot themselves in the foot in their defeat to St Johnstone on Saturday.
And the defender hopes the signing of defender Matt Kilgallon, midfielder Scott Martin and strikers James Keatings and Fredrik Brustad will provide competition for places and force everybody to raise their game.
Mcmann said: “In the first half we shot ourselves in the foot with two sloppy goals, and gave ourselves a mountain to climb going into the second half. The first half is what cost us.
“We started the game OK, and in the second half we reacted well, got a goal back.
“We thought the goal would get us right back into the game and we could then push for the equaliser, but it wasn’t to be. Ultimately we didn’t create enough or do enough.
“We’ve made some new signings and that should push us on, give us more competition for places. It should motivate us more to train better and play better, so it’s all good and bodes well for the future.”
Hamilton boss Martin Canning’s 10th anniversary at Hamilton Accies was an unhappy one.
St Johnstone were high and dry by the interval thanks to goals by Blair Alston and David Mcmillan, and in truth the scoreline somewhat flattered Accies.
Saints huffed and puffed in the second half but didn’t need a third goal – and it showed.
