Laughs hard to come by

-

I Feel Pretty (12)

Amy Schumer has failed to build on promising big screen lead bow Trainwreck and this Big wannabe is her weakest outing yet.

She shows a knack for physical comedy but her beauty junkie Renee is pretty unlikable in any form. Critically, there are few laughs to be had as the potentially high concept quickly runs out of steam.

Hatchet 4 (18)

If you’re a fan of the Hatchet series then you’ll know exactly what to expect – and get a kick out of this instalment.

Adam Green returns to helm after handing over directing duties on the third flick and he again bombards us with gore. Most of the jokes fall flat but it’s so intense and over-the-top fans will struggle to notice.

The Strangers: Prey at Night (15)

Johannes Roberts does a pretty good job with this horror sequel by embracing what worked well in the original – slow-burn tension and relentless killers – while upping the violence levels.

Most nail-biting moments come from the impressive sound design, a grimy, old-school aesthetic and the antagonists’ creepy masks.

But while a location change was inevitable, this follow-up loses a lot of the claustrophobic dread running through the original by moving from a single house to a mobile home park.

There might not be the figurative audience throat-grabbing of the first flick, but Roberts does at least forcefully hold you down by the shoulders.
