Countdown is on

Time to get set for big day

- Shirley Bartynek

Hamilton will be packed with runners this weekend as the town centre hosts its first major sporting event.

Your Advertiser has teamed up with Hamilton Business Improvement District (BID) to bring you the Hamilten 10k run on Saturday, September 22.

Hundreds have signed up for the incredible new event, a first for the town.

Those taking part will be able to take in some of the town’s most famous landmarks as they compete.

But it’s not all about the winning – we want to see as many people out in the streets, ready to cheer on those taking part.

And there will also be plenty of fun for the family while the runners are in action.

There will be street performers, face painting, a magician, stilt walkers and live music from the Bag Rockers.

Runners should collect their race numbers at the pop-up registration unit near the Vue Cinema, along with their timing chip, bag label and event t-shirt.

Registration will run from 8am to 9.30am, and this will be followed by a race briefing at 9.40am then a mass warmup at 9.50am.

There will be no changing/ shower facilities available, however toilets will be available at the start/finish area and also at Asda.

The race starts and finishes within Castle Street, behind Frankie and Benny’s.

Parking will be available

adjacent to Hamilton train and bus station and commercial car parks (where charges will apply).

Gareth Walker, manager of Hamilton BID, said: “It’s going to be a fantastic day. We would urge all participants to get to registration early in plenty of time for the race starting.

“There will be lots going on for all the family to enjoy. We would encourage everyone to come down to cheer on and support all those taking part.

“We will also have spotters throughout the course, who will be feeding back who is in which position throughout the race.”

The race will begin at 10am with Radio Clyde’s Gina Mckie on hand to get the crowd under starter’s orders.

There will also be prizes awarded to the winners of each category: 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female overall;1st, 2nd and 3rd senior male and female; 1st, 2nd and 3rd Vet 40 male and female; and 1st, 2nd, 3rd Vet 50 male and female. This will be made at around 11.30am11.45am. Participants will also get a goody bag at the end of the race with a bottle of Strathmore water, packet of Border Biscuits, one-day free pass to Xercise4less and a medal.
