Medal haul for the Black Belt Academy
Students from Mcgowan’s Black Belt Academy in Hamilton returned with a haul of medals from the 20th Grand Master Sutherland Open Championships.
The Bertram Street school topped the medals table for the second year running at the competition, which was held at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility in Motherwell.
In total 26 competitors, ranging in age from seven through to teenagers and adults, took part in the event on Sunday, September 9. Medal winners were: Patterns: Gold: Ryan Campbell, Cameron Reid, Jack Dobbie. Silver: Sophia Harnes. Bronze: James Weston, Fiona Cowan, Rachel Steven, Erin Mccabe. Sparring: Gold: Rachel Steven, Alana Moody Sophia Harnes, Ella Wong, Jay Mccaig, Lewis Mclean, Darragh Lightbody.
Silver: Cara Wong, Harry Mcnulty, Ryan Byres, Caitlin Harnes, Erin Mccabe, Ruaridh Agnew, Vince Cunningham, Cameron Reid.
Bronze: Emily Boyd, James Weston, Fiona Cowan, Joe Colville, Ethan Naughton, Ryan Campbell, Tyler Bebbington, Ewan Mclean, Jack Dobbie. Flying overhead kick: Gold: Lewis Mclean. Silver: Ewan Mclean, Ella Wong. Bronze: Ruaridh Agnew. Instructor Kieran Mcgowan said: “There were excellent performances on the floor in some tough sparring divisions in particular.
“As a club we topped the medals table for the second year in a row, so we are absolutely delighted that our hard work in preparation has paid off.
“The coaches and parents were fantastic in supporting the students. We’re all straight back to work now, preparing for the British Championships in November.”
Mcgowan’s Black Belt Academy is based in Bertram Street, just off Glasgow Road, with classes for all ages.
