Hamilton supporters answer their club’s cash collection call

- Leona Greenan

Football fans dug deep at the weekend to help raise money for the family of tragic Hamilton schoolgirl Rachel Steven.

Organised by the club prior to their SPFL match against Dundee at home last Saturday, a bucket collection raised cash to help her devastated mum Donna.

And the total amount raised is set to be doubled by Accies.

The club’s plans to hold the fundraiser were announced on their Facebook page last week prior to the game where they stated: “There will be collection points at all turnstiles.

“We are reaching out to all Hamilton and Dundee fans to support this and together we can raise funds for the family. Whatever is raised on the day, Hamilton Academical FC will double this.”

The club added:“we are deeply saddened by this tragic news and would like to pass on our deepest condolences to Rachel’s family and friends.”

Supporters took to social media to hail the move last week after the 12-year-old Rachel’s untimely death.

Stuart Douglas said:“well done Accies. Proper community spirit. God bless wee Rachel and her family.”

Melanie Mclear added:“Well done Accies, what a lovely thing to do.”

Amanda Mcdowall said:“as per usual, Hamilton Accies man up and show ultimate kindness and love. How fortunate we are to live in a town who passionately care for their own.”

Fans also carried out a minute’s applause during the 12th minute of the game as a mark of respect for the St John Ogilvie High School pupil.

Hamilton Accies chief executive Colin Mcgowan said this week:“i am lost for words that one so young has lost her life. It’s a sad world.”
