Sex offender cried for mum in court

- Court reporter

A Motherwell sex offender began wailing for his mum as he was locked up for assaulting a young woman in her own home.

Jordan Morrison begged ‘Please, please, you can’t do this, I’m sorry,’ after being sentenced to 15 months in jail.

Lawyers watched in stunned silence as the tearful 21-year-old shouted repeatedly for his mum in the public gallery. First offender Morrison appeared reluctant to leave the dock and pleaded with Sheriff Thomas Millar to change his mind about the sentence.

He was eventually led to the cells at Hamilton Sheriff Court and told by his escort to ‘calm down’.

Morrison, of Morton Street, Motherwell, admitted molesting the woman at a house in Bellshill on June 24 last year.

Solicitor Diarmid Bruce said his client was sorry for his behaviour towards the woman, whom he knew, and by pleading guilty had spared her the ordeal of giving evidence. He said Morrison has a fulltime job and suggested a community payback order could be imposed “steer him in the right direction”.

But Sheriff Millar told Morrison: “This is a very serious matter which has had a fairly devastating effect on the young woman. It was a breach of trust she had placed in you by letting you into her home on that occasion. I’m afraid nothing other than a custodial sentence is appropriate.”

The sheriff said he would have jailed Morrison for 20 months but for his guilty plea to an amended charge.

Morrison was also put on the Offenders’ Register for 10 years. to Sex
