Fifty reasons to celebrate
Couples’ special get-together
Wed you believe it – couples from throughout the Lanarkshire area enjoyed a golden day out as they got together to celebrate 50 happy years of marriage.
New memories were made and old ones rekindled last week as they shared reminiscences at South Lanarkshire Council’s headquarters in Hamilton.
Many golden couples like these ones from across Hamilton, Bothwell, Larkhall and Stonehouse were invited along to join in the fun. They enjoyed an afternoon tea and were entertained by the music of their era.
The annual event is hosted alternately by the North and South Lanarkshire local authorities and guests were welcomed on this occasion by South Lanarkshire’s Provost Ian Mcallan, in the company of his northern counterpart, Provost Jean Jones.
Provost Mcallan said: “There is no one formula for a happy marriage – every one is unique and there are different difficulties and joys that each couple faces along the way.
“What we saw at this event, however, is what is the same truth for all – that it is all about finding that one person who is for you and, with that perfect pairing, a bond is formed that is unshakeable. It was a delight to see that in so many couples and each one of them has my admiration and my congratulations.”
And for one couple, the venue was certainly familiar ground – among those celebrating 50 years of marriage this year were South Lanarkshire Council’s leader, and Hamilton councillor, John Ross and his wife, Irene.
Councillor Ross said: “It is always a lovely event, with such a great atmosphere, but it was so nice to experience it from the unofficial side, and to be able to enjoy it as a participant.
“Irene and I loved every minute of it and felt privileged to be among so many inspiring and interesting couples from all parts of Lanarkshire.”
Provost Jones was also thrilled to be part of the event. She said: “Things have changed so much since 1968 but the one thing which has remained is the lasting commitment that these couples have to each other.
“We’re now living in a world where we can get everything superfast, delivered the next day – guaranteed – and up to the minute. But it’s important to take time to remember the lasting memories over the last 50 years.
“I congratulate every couple on reaching this milestone in their married lives and I hope they all have many more happy years together.”
