A drug-crazed son stabbed his mum at her Bellshill home moments after threatening to slit her throat.

Kieran Kelly, said to have been high on street Valium, claimed that he was “horrified” at what he’d done.

His lawyer said that the 24-yearold has psychiatric issues and had been “an accident waiting to happen”.

However, his plea for freedom so that he can tackle his mental health problems was rejected by Sheriff Alasdair Macfadyen who jailed him for two years.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard Kelly’s mum, Carolann Toner, needed stitches in a hand wound she sustained trying to grab the knife from him at her home in South View, Bellshill, on March 27 this year.

Kelly, a prisoner at Addiewell, admitted uttering threats and brandishing a knife at his mum whereby she was cut on the hand to her severe injury.

Vish Kathuria, prosecuting, said Kelly’s estranged partner and their three children were also in the house when Kelly came in late at night.

He was under the influence and told his ex he had been taking street Valium.

An argument broke out and Kelly grabbed a kitchen knife, yelling ‘I’ll slit your throat’.

Ms Toner (46) saw her son come at her with the blade and put her hand out.

This resulted in her suffering a 3cm wound to her palm which required three sutures.

Another, smaller, cut to her hand was closed with glue.

Mr Kathuria told the court: “The accused’s estranged partner advised him to leave, which he did.

“Police officers arrived 10 minutes later.

“They saw spots of blood and a kitchen knife was found in the sink.

“Kelly returned after an hour. Four police officers were present at that point. He was arrested. Blood spots on his jogging bottoms and zipper top were later analysed and found to be his mother’s.

“He was heavily under the influence and could not be interviewed at that time.

“He made no comment when questioned the next morning.”

In court, Kelly claimed that he hadn’t meant to cause injury to anyone but himself.

Defence agent Ian Scott said: “He did not intend to harm his mother.

“He was suicidal and brought a knife out.

“As soon as the knife made contact with her, he was contrite – horrified that she had been injured.

“He says she took hold of the knife and her injuries are consistent with that explanation.

“He was under the influence of a number of substances that night.

“He is still very fond of his mother.

“He was anxious that this matter be resolved without her having to give evidence in court as that would have put her in a very difficult position.” Mr Scott said background and psychiatric reports detailed Kelly’s difficulties.

He had been held in custody since March and there was a recommendation that he could be released back into the community under supervision.

The agent added: “Having read the reports, it would seem that he was an accident waiting to happen.

“Fortunately, the damage he’s caused would appear to have been not too great.”

Sending Kelly back to prison, Sheriff Macfadyen acknowledged he has problems, but stressed: “The court also must take account of the nature of the offence and this was an assault involving the use of a weapon.

“Your record of previous convictions starts in 2011 and there are a number for crimes of violence and disorderly conduct.”

Sheriff Macfadyen added: “I’m afraid only custody is appropriate because of your record and the gravity of this offence.”
