Accies Women are relegated

-

Rangers Ladies beat their Hamilton Accies counterparts 5-2 at New Tinto Park on Sunday, relegating them to the SWPL 2.

Three goals down after a horror opening spell, it rapidly became an operation to salvage some pride.

Coach Gary Doctor said his side simply gave themselves too much to do after that, adding:“it was a crazy first 25 minutes; we had to chase the game after just two minutes, and we had chances to equalise in that spell , but they punished us by taking their opportunity.

“Ultimately we haven’t taken points earlier this season when we should have.

“I’m disappointed for the players, who have put in so much hard work. We restored some pride in the second half, but in the end we haven’t been good enough throughout the season.”

Rangers opened the scoring in two minutes when Carla Boyce shrugged off a challenge to score from a tight angle, and Jade Gallon added a second 15 minutes later, tapping in from close range.

Lori Gardner missed a golden opportunity in 22 minutes, and Rangers added a third three minutes later when Claire Gemmell headed a corner in at the near post.

Gardner pulled a goal back for Accies in 58 minutes, volleying home a rebound, but more calamitous defending undid that at the other end as Boyce tapped in her second in 61 minutes.

Gardner scrambled in a second goal at a corner, but Rangers added their fifth through Gemmell with two minutes left.
