Woman, 74, dies after crash

A 74-year-old woman died following a road crash on the M74 last Wednesday (October 24).

Police are appealing for informatio­n following the incident, which caused major tailbacks and traffic congestion around the area.

Around 4.05pm, an orange bus collided with a white Renault HGV on the M74 southbound, near Junction 6, Motherwell.

A 74-year-old female passenger on the bus was seriously injured during the impact and was taken by ambulance to Wishaw General Hospital where she died later. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Two other passengers on the bus, both women, aged 78 and 77 years, sustained minor injuries.

They too were taken by ambulance to the University Hospital Wishaw where they were treated and have since been discharged.

The 63-year-old driver of the bus was treated by ambulance staff at the scene for minor injuries.

The 59-year-old male driver of the Renault HGV was not injured.

Sergeant Stewart Dyer, Motherwell Road Policing Unit, said: “We would like to hear from anyone who saw the crash, including those with any dashcam footage, and also the drivers of two cars, one blue and one red (NFD), who were in the area round the time of the crash.

“Their informatio­n could prove vital to the investigat­ion.

“Witnesses or anyone with informatio­n can contact Motherwell Road Policing Unit via 101, quoting reference number 2405 of the October 24, 2018.”
