Pupils donate to help hungry

- Leona Greenan

Youngsters from Chatelherault Primary have been learning about the work of Hamilton and District Foodbank.

The charity’s Jim Sweeney visited the school to talk to the children about the efforts of volunteers who staff the foodbank.

The children and their families have also been collecting for the charity and Jim thanked everyone for their donations.

Principal teacher Veronica Walker said: “Many thanks to all of the local residents who dropped off food for Hamilton and District Foodbank after our room 2 pupils delivered flyers about the worthwhile cause.

“Thanks also to Jim for taking time out of his day to come along and speak with the pupils.”

Hamilton and District Foodbank is based on Townhead Street and also operates from the Nazarene Hall in Blantyre.

Schools, churches, businesses and individuals donate nonperishable food to the foodbank, where volunteers sort it and pack it into boxes to be given to people in need.

Donations can be off at the foodbank dropped bases or the Salvation Army Burnblea Street.

Distribution centre opening times: The Nazarene Hall, Elm Street, Blantyre, Tuesday and centre on Thursday, 11am till 2pm; 20 Townhead Street, Hamilton, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, noon till 2pm; and The Salvation Army, Burnblea Street, Hamilton, Monday, 11am till 2pm.
