Gym staff to sleep out for charity

-

Big-hearted staff at a Hamilton gym are gearing up to take part in the annual Sleep in the Park event in Glasgow.

Four workers from The Gym at the Palace Grounds Retail Park will join thousands of people who will sleep rough in Kelvin Grove Park in December in an event organised by social enterprise group Social Bite.

The event aims to call for an end to homelessness in Scotland by encouraging thousands to sleep in the streets for one night. Last year, the sleep-out raised £4 million for projects which aid those experiencing housing problems.

And the 2018 event looks like it will smash through those numbers on Saturday, December 8.

Darren Mcmahon, Chris Watson, Cat Boyle and Fiona Meikle will be going along to support the event.

Personal trainer Darren said:“i wanted to take part because it’s such a big problem in this country. The deaths among homeless people from last year has doubled which is frightening, so our my aim is to raise £3000 to help out.

“When I decided to take part I spoke to my manager Chris who will join me as well and we are using The Gym Hamilton as a drop-off point for clothes, sleeping bags.

“We have donation buckets in the gym as well and we are running a raffle.”

Top prizes include an overnight at Turnberry Hotel and a round of golf at Loch Lomond.

Darren said the team are on a mission to raise as much money as possible and added: “We will be doing a 24-hour challenge in the gym on November 1, where we will be doing 24 classes in 24 hours to raise money.”
