Motherwell school pupils met the man behind the Tunnock’s Teacake at a science fair in the town.

Youngsters from Dalziel, Braidhurst, Taylor and Brannock high schools all got a taste of what their future could hold.

They were at the Big Bang Fair in Motherwell’s New College Lanarkshire campus and met head of famed Uddingston-based confectioners Tunnock’s, Boyd Tunnock.

Mr Tunnock said: “First and second year at school is the best stage to interest young people and show them what they can do; anything from becoming a motorcycle mechanic to a baker. You’ve got so much to choose from here at the college.

“Technology is very important to us at Tunnock’s – we’re continually training people and bringing in modern equipment to improve our business. It’s super to be asked to come to the college today.”

The Big Bang Fair was a showcase of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects that allowed pupils to try out new skills in a fun learning environment.

Organised by Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) and ESP, it aimed to inspire them into pursuing a career in Stemrelated roles through engaging with exciting interactive activities and speaking with employers.

Alison Nimmo, programme manager of DYW, said: “Big Bang is a Uk-wide initiative which is promoted across Scotland. It presents a fantastic opportunity for our young people to gain an inspirational insight into a wide range of interactive Stem-related activities and related careers.”
