Jailed for street attack captured on CCTV

- Court reporter

A Viewpark man has been jailed after a court was shown CCTV pictures of a street attack in broad daylight.

Joseph Buchanan (29), a prisoner, and Ross Murray (21), of Ross Drive, Viewpark, admitted punching and kicking Kenny Lilly in Merrick Terrace, Tannochside, on November 18 last year.

Buchanan also admitted making threats while carrying a knife.

A third accused, Craig Bell (28), of Cypress Avenue, Viewpark, had his not guilty plea to the assault charge accepted.

Murray was sent to prison for 16 months when he appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

Buchanan, who is in jail for another matter, had sentence deferred until January for a report on his behaviour from the prison governor.

Michael Macintosh, prosecuting, showed the court film of the attack which happened shortly after midday.

Mr Lilly and another man could be seen unloading items from the boot of a car. Another vehicle drew up and three men got out. The trio approached and then Buchanan and Murray launched an attack on Mr Lilly.

The fiscal explained: “He was punched on the head and body which forced him against the back of the vehicle. A scuffle ensued and Mr Lilly fell. While he was lying on the ground he was kicked on the head by Murray.

“Buchanan had a knife and made threats before he and his two companions left the scene.

“Mr Lilly was feeling lightheaded, and police and an ambulance were called. He was taken to Monklands Hospital where he was found to have swelling to the side of his face and jaw, bruising around his eye and an abrasion to his back.

“The injuries were not regarded as serious and no further treatment was required.”

A defence agent said there was a “background” involving Murray and Mr Lilly which had led to the confrontation.
