24-hour gym effort for charity

- Kirsten Mcstay

The Gym in Hamilton took part in a 24-hour charity challenge as part of their fundraising mission for the homeless.

Staff at the Palace Grounds Retail Park venue are on a mission to raise as much money as possible for Sleep in the Park.

As well as taking part in the actual event on December 8, the team organised a 24-hour gym challenge where they held 24 classes and managed to raise over £1500.

Gym attack, spinbox, flex, kettlebells and burn were only just a few of the classes on the programme.

The staff will sleep rough in Kelvingrove Park in December in an event organised by social enterprise group Social Bite. It aims to call for an end to homelessness in Scotland by encouraging thousands to sleep in the streets for one night.

Last year, the sleep-out raised £4 million for projects which aid those experiencing housing problems.

Personal trainer Darren Mcmahon said everyone done really well during the challenge. He said:“we did 24 classes over the 24 hours, each class was half an hour long.

“Four of us completed them all, while other members came and went some doing up to 12 classes.

“We’ve raised £1500 so far. We are halfway there. We did a drop-off last week with clothes, a few people over the weekend have came down with more clothes as well, so it’s going well. Starbucks Hamilton were coming over and supplying us with coffee too.”

The Gym also took to Facebook to thank everyone for taking part. They said:“after using the weekend to recover from 24 classes in 24 hours, we managed to count the funds raised and it was £1500!

“Huge thank you to all the staff and members that took part in this awesome event and to all of our friends, family and fellow members that were kind enough to donate.

“Our fundraising efforts do not stop here. We will continue to raise funds right up until the main event on Saturday, December 8.

“First off, if you still wish to donate to our online fundraising total then you can still do so. Thank you in advance to any of you that donate anything at all you can spare, every £1 counts.

“We also have a huge raffle with prizes including overnight at Turnberry, afternoon tea with Prosecco in Edinburgh, Glasgow overnights, restaurant vouchers, beauty packages and more at only £5 per strip.

“Help us spread the word of our raffle. Brilliant prizes to be win just in time for Christmas presents.

“Well done everyone involved in the 24-hour challenge. You all smashed it!”
