Thousands of homes planned
North Lanarkshire unveils five-year plan
Council chiefs hope to deliver over 2300 new and affordable home over the next five years.
Projects have been included in the local authority’s next Strategic Housing Investment Plan (SHIP) which is now being submitted to the Scottish Government.
It aims to deliver 2357 new affordable homes between 2019 and 2024, regenerating and investing in communities and bringing benefits to the local economy.
Councillor Allan Graham, convener of enterprise and housing at North Lanarkshire Council, said: “By developing new affordable housing we’re contributing to reducing inequalities through the provision of good quality, energy efficient and accessible homes that meet the needs of people living in our local communities.
“It supports our business plan priority of improving economic outcomes and opportunities by supporting the provision of access to highquality housing.
“By producing a long-term plan, we’ll realise our vision to help people to achieve their potential, and be safe, healthy, included and supported in our communities.”
The plans for new homes will help meet local housing needs across North Lanarkshire and will be delivered by the council and housing associations supported by potential funding of £135m from the Scottish Government.
Of the 2357 homes in the plan, it is proposed that 1200 will be new council properties,
The SHIP supports the delivery of the council’s local housing strategy which sets out the key priorities of:
• Promoting the supply of good-quality, affordable housing across all tenures;
• Contributing to the regeneration and sustainability of communities, including town centres;
• Providing appropriate housing support and helping to prevent homelessness;
• Ensuring there is a range of housing and support in place to meet the needs of older people and those with specific needs;
• Tackling fuel poverty and helping to meet the climate change target, and
• Improving housing stock of all tenures.
