Healthy options for school week
Positive campaign for primary and nursery pupils
Pupils at David Livingstone Memorial Primary and nursery school in Blantyre celebrated health week.
In school, the children were learning about having a healthy diet, mind and body and health week gave the children lots of opportunities to explore these different aspects.
They took part in a whole school healthy smoothie competition and participated in lots of different sporting activities including cricket, netball, rugby and activities with the ‘megaball.’
Children also did some yoga, mindfulness and relaxation under the guidance of the Cosmic Kids videos and made healthy sandwiches to teach them all about healthy diets.
Jennifer Lattimer, principal teacher at the school said: “Some of the children learned about swapping unhealthy snacks for healthy ones.
“They used food preparation skills to make vegetable faces which had courgette spaghetti hair and colourful pepper smiles.
“The children also took part in a session all about mental health and created ‘fidget toys’ as an example of something that can help to calm their minds.
“Netball was a firm favourite activity with some of the classes where they learned about the netball positions, and practised passing and shooting.
“There are definitely some future stars in the school.”
Other activities throughout the week included a healthy quiz for the senior school, a Go Noodle fitness drill, dance sessions, fruit kebab making, a circuits challenge and a fit Friday walk.
The nursery children also had a very healthy week making healthy snacks, playing Megaball and learning about road safety.
Ms Lattimer added: “Staff and pupils at the school would like to say a great big thank you to all who contributed to make the week such a success: Uddingston Cricket Club, Lesley Scanlon (Active Schools Coordinator), Charlie at Cruden Building and Hamilton Rugby Club.
“The children had a fantastic time.”
