Canning says sorry to fans for dire show in Perth

Boss fuming at his players after 4-0 drubbing

St Johnstone ................. 4 Hamilton ...................... 0

Raging Hamilton boss Martin Canning tore a strip off his side following their 4-0 drubbing at St Johnstone on Saturday.

Accies haven’t taken three points from Mcdiarmid Park since January 2015, and they didn’t come close to upsetting the Perth side’s now five-game winning streak without conceding a goal.

Goalkeeper Zander Clark’s bid for a club shut-out record was never in doubt as Murray Davidson, Matty Kennedy and David Wotherspoon helped themselves to goals, while Drey Wright’s first-half effort took a wicked deflection off Accies defender Ziggy Gordon.

Canning fumed: “There are no positives to take from that. We were second-best all over the pitch. It was a really disappointing day, given that we were coming here on the back of a good win last week.

“We just didn’t compete, which was really disappointing. If you don’t compete you lose and that’s what happened.

“St Johnstone didn’t have to play well to beat us, that was a really poor one for us.

“We need to dust ourselves down now and be ready for Celtic in a fortnight.

“There is plenty we can work on, plenty we can look back at, it’s a sore one.

“For me it’s a difficult one to watch as well, from a management point of view, for the staff, players and the fans.

“From a fans’ point of view that’s a horrendous journey, to drive up to Perth and watch that, so again it’s an apology from me to them because that’s not acceptable.”
