Horror defeat for ’Well
Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson was left raging with officials on Sunday but says that’s no excuse for the 7-1 drubbing by Rangers at Ibrox.
A competitive game as Curtis Main levelled Scott Arfield’s early opener changed dramatically with Carl Mchugh’s 34th-minute red card.
The defender picked up a booking for a foul on Alfredo Morelos and quickly received a second for hand-ball, leading to a penalty which was scored by James Tavernier for a 2-1 lead.
Morelos made it 3-1 before half-time, and second-half goals from Arfield, Glenn Middleton and an Eros Grezda double completed the rout.
Robinson, who was sent to the stand for his protest over the red card, said: “We looked like we had an excuse in the bag. The decision changes a big aspect of the game but the manner of the defeat was really disappointing.
“It was woeful defending and people need to look long and hard at themselves.
“I thought it was a penalty and the letter of the law suggests that he needs to be sent off – but the first booking is a disgrace, it’s embarrassing, and I have to say that referees are being conned by the same people, continually.”
Robinson added:“members of their staff came up to voice their opinion, I was the only one sent to the stand.
“A young boy, out of his depth as a fourth official, Craig Napier, obviously can’t deal with that.”
