Salute to the fallen

New bench to mark WWI heroes

- Stefanie Mccourt

Hamilton fell silent to pay respect to those who made the ultimate sacrifice during Worldwar one.

Crowds gathered to mark 100 years since the end of the conflict at the cenotaph in the public park on Bothwell road.

A new decorative bench has been installed at Bothwell Road park to commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War.

The bench, which incorporates the image of Armed Forces personnel, war horse, nurse, ambulance and poppies, has been installed with the help of the Bothwell Road Action Group (BRAG).

Funding was obtained through the CALA Homes’ community bursary, while the design was chosen through an online vote on BRAG’S Facebook page.

The bench – along with a second bench provided by South Lanarkshire Council – was unveiled at a service in the park last Saturday, which was attended by BRAG members, volunteers, local councillors and members of the armed forces community.

Members of the North and South Lanarkshire Vespa Clubs also attended to pay their respects.

The dedication and blessing was conducted by the Rev Ross Blackman of Hamilton Old Parish Church.

BRAG chairperson, Peter Mcghee, said: “We are delighted to be able to commemorate the sacrifice of all who were involved in conflicts around the world that never came home.

“We are grateful for the funding from CALA Homes and the assistance of James Meechan and the ground services team at South Lanarkshire Council.

“We are also extremely grateful for the members of the North and South Lanarkshire Vespa Club for attending and giving the event a little colour, and Rev Ross Blackman for his moving words.”

Hamilton North and East councillor, Davie Mclachlan, added: “It was a privilege to be able to attend. I am particularly grateful to Rev Ross Blackman for his beautiful blessing in the company of the volunteers of Bothwell Road Action Group, and, the unexpected presence of both North and South Lanarkshire Scooter Clubs who laid their own wreath to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1.

“I’d like to thank Rev Blackman and BRAG.”
