A Hamilton man attacked his wife in their bedroom after branding her a “waste of space” over her drinking.

Martin Davidson punched and kicked spouse Mary repeatedly and choked her before she fled the house to get help.

Davidson (54), a prisoner, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday.

He admitted assaulting his wife to her severe injury and permanent disfigurement at their home in William Street on July 29. Aga Mathieson, prosecuting, said the couple had been married for 19 years.

She added that Mrs Davidson had an alcohol issue which she was “trying to address”. The assault happened at 8.30am. Ms Mathieson told the court: “The accused was adamant his wife had been consuming alcohol and shouted ‘You are a waste of space’.

“He then pulled her from the bed on to the floor and proceeded to kick and punch her on the head and body.

“She put her arms in front of her face in an attempt to defend herself and the accused then put his hands around her throat, shouting ‘I’ll do time for you’.

“Then he left the bedroom and Mrs Davidson went to her father’s house, and the police were contacted.”

The victim suffered two cuts to her head, one of which will leave a scar, as well as bruising to her body.

A bone in her hand was broken during the attack.

Sheriff Shiona Waldron called for background reports and deferred sentence until December 6.

Davidson was remanded in custody.
