Tributes paid to club member
Hamilton Speakers Club has paid tribute to a long-serving member who passed away.
George K Duncan joined in December 1976, and attended regularly for more than 40 years. Serving as president in 1983-84, he encouraged many speakers to fulfil their potential, both in their main speeches, and with their response to topics. He remained a committed and active member until shortly before he died.
A club spokesperson said:“he took part in most club activities, including club development, and social activities where he was joined by his wife, Nan. He was well regarded as a senior statesman within Hamilton Speakers Club, where his advice and comments helped to build and fashion the ethos of the club.
“His contribution to the club will be valued for many years to come.”
Meanwhile, the club met last Thursday in Ferniegair Hall.
President Colin Jones handed the gavel to Alec Maxwell, the chair for the evening.
Topics included whether should we breed edible insects; should the same age limits be set for marriage, drinking, voting and military service’changing standard exam pass marks to 40 per cent; and how to debunk fake news.
Hamilton Speakers Club is the oldest club of its kind in Lanarkshire and lets people speak in a friendly and supportive atmosphere every week.
