Thug smeared dog poo on partner’s face

Victim left stunned and in tears after ‘horrible’act

- Court reporter

A man smeared dog excrement on his partner’s face, leaving her stunned and in tears.

Taxi driver Brian Douglas could now be jailed after he was found guilty of assaulting Liz Paton.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard the couple had been out drinking in June this year, but Douglas (46), of Fernslea Avenue, Blantyre, was furious when Ms Paton went to speak to other people in the pub. They argued when they returned to her flat in Hamilton.

Ms Paton (52) told the court her puppy was being house-trained and had defecated on the floor. She said Douglas picked up the poo and smeared it down the left side of her face.

He then cut himself when he punched a glass door in the common close and asked her to call an ambulance.

But she contacted the police and shocked officers saw the excrement on her face when they arrived.

Ms Paton told the court: “I was stunned and shocked. I couldn’t believe he had done that to me.”

Douglas denied responsibility, telling his solicitor, Anthony Borland: “The dog dropped its load at my feet.

“I went into the bathroom to get toilet roll and wiped it up. Liz told me to leave and that she was phoning the police.

“I threw the toilet bathroom. “She’s made this up. It’s fantasy.” But prosecutor Gillian Bradshaw accused Douglas of “the nastiest, most horrible thing”.

She told him: “You thought you would show how angry you were with Elizabeth, picked up the dog excrement and wiped it roll into the on her face.” Douglas replied: “That’s wrong. I would not go to that extreme. That’s nasty.”

The court heard the couple had been in a relationship for two and a half years.

Sheriff Liam Murphy described Ms Paton as a “credible and reliable” witness and found Douglas guilty of assault.

The sheriff called for background reports and continued bail.

Douglas, who admitted threatening or abusive behaviour towards Ms Paton, damaging a door and stealing cash, will be sentenced on all charges next month.
