Brian’s four-day trek in Sahara

53-year-old dad’s Diabetes UK mission

- Shirley Bartynek

A big-hearted Eddlewood dad spent four days walking through the Sahara desert raising cash for charity.

Brian Thomson has completed a number of treks over the years for Diabetes UK, and this November he added the Moroccan desert to his list.

The 53-year-old explained: “I was away from November 9 to 15 and spent four days walking through the desert in Morocco.

“There were 15 people in our group, all raising funds for various charities.

“We walked a total of 100km, or 62 miles, mainly in 32 degree heat which was pretty hard going for a pasty white Scotsman.

“I was actually very glad that on the final day we were walking in a sandstorm, as it was much cooler and more to my liking.

“The camels lived up to their cantankerous reputation of being bad-tempered and uncooperative, but did transport our heavy main bags from one camp to another.

“All in all another fantastic experience, so far my fundraising stands at £3289.35 and I still have more cash to collect from my work colleagues.

“Thanks to everyone who helped with the fundraising or donated prizes to our eighties night earlier this year, also everyone who participated in our Hike4hayley 4 and, last but not least, Lynn Taylor and Eilidh Mccool of Santander for match-funding.”

There’s still time to make a donation if you would like to, by going onto Hike4hayley’s Facebook page or by going onto the Virgin Money Giving page at uk.virginmoneygiving. com/hike4hayley.”

Brian has now completed treks which include Everest Base Camp, the Grand Canyon, Mt Kilimanjaro, the Great Wall of China, Lares Trail in Peru, the West Highland Way, three peaks in 24 hours and a skydive raising over £35,000 for various charities.
