THIS’LL BE A DEFINER

Gordon admits next two games are pivotal to season

- Andy Mcgilvray

Defender Ziggy Gordon admits the next week is‘season defining’ for Hamilton, they’re locked in a ‘mini league’ and they’ve dropped too many points.

Hamilton make the short trip to St Mirren in Paisley on Saturday, travel to Dundee on Wednesday, and host Hibs the following weekend.

It’s those two games, against the two teams directly below Accies in the Premiership table, that are going to be of particular importance, and the 25-yearold didn’t hold back in his assessment.

“It is season-defining,” he said. “We have to recuperate this week, buckle down, and if we have any aspirations of staying in this league we have to not lose those games.

“It has already been shown that there is a mini-league emerging and I think St Mirren and Dundee will be looking at us next week and thinking of it as a cup final. We will also be looking at it as a cup final.

“They will be ready to go, and as long as we match their enthusiasm and determination to win, we will win the game.

“If we could take six points from the games that would be huge, but every game is huge.

“We’ve given too many points away to teams that, for me, are not much better than us, and we just don’t seem to be getting the breaks at the moment.

“I hate using that phrase, because it seems like you’re feeling bad for yourself, but I do think that the ball is just not opening up for us but it seems to do that for the teams we play against.

“Every mistake we make seems to be capitalised upon, and when other teams make mistakes we don’t seem to get the bounce or the nick that we need. Hopefully this is a good time to get it!”

Gordon wasn’t happy with Celtic’s 3-0 win at the HOPECBD Stadium on Saturday, and says teams around them have shown how to take points from the champions.

He said: “You draw a line under that game and move on, but it’s one of those at home that you should be able to take something from.

“St Mirren and Livingston have showed us, and they’re not teams that are better than us, so there’s no reason why Celtic have the right to just come here, win the game and take three points. You need to make it difficult, you need to get the fundamentals right.

“The first goal is a corner they’ve hit short, Callum Mcgregor has then just played the ball into a free man in Ryan Christie and that’s just not good enough.

“If you want to beat Celtic you have to get the fundamentals right, and if they’re going to beat you they have to be better than you.

“In the main, they didn’t create many chances, I don’t think they started particularly well, and we could have pushed them more, but sometimes it comes down to a wee bit of luck.

“We weren’t getting throw-ins and corners to slow the game down, so they pressured us into making mistakes.”
