Lifesaver Liz is honoured

-

A member of St Andrew’s First Aid was honoured after helping save a football fan’s life.

Hamilton woman Liz Seymour – who has been a first aider for 17 years – received the chairman’s award at the St Andrew’s First Aid Scottish First Aid Awards alongside Craig Simpson, who is just 16.

Just minutes into their shift in August, the pair were called to assist a man who was having a cardiac arrest at Celtic Park.

The pair carried out CPR and successfully resuscitated him and waited with until an ambulance arrived. Thankfully, the man, who was attending the match with his grandson, recovered.

South Lanarkshire Council worker Liz (53) said: “I was truly humbled to receive this award – to even be nominated was a complete surprise.

“We had a job to do and got it done and thankfully it had a happy ending – knowing that we got the man back to his family makes it all worthwhile.”

Liz went on: “It’s been a tough year for me personally so I was very happy to get this.

“But there are so many first aiders, all of whom are volunteers, out there who are as or more deserving of this.

Gayle Adyana, managing director of St Andrew’s First Aid Training and Supplies, said: “I attended the football match to see our volunteers in action.

“I was totally moved by the way in which Craig and Liz handled the situation.”

She added: “You hear about unsung heroes but I had the privilege of seeing heroism in action.”
