A big-hearted Hamilton builder has stepped in to help the plight of a young man from Larkhall.

Bill Mcevoy, owner of Earnock Builders, was appalled to read that Kenneth Murphy struggles to get out of the house each day without a ramp.

Kenneth’s story was highlighted in the Advertiser last month after his mum, Angela, posted footage of her son on social media in a desperate plea for help.

In the footage, Kenneth, who has cerebral palsy and is partially sighted, could be seen bravely having to inch out of his front door before struggling down two concrete steps, then placing himself in his wheelchair.

The video went viral, and before long Angela was being sent messages of support and offers of help from around the world.

However, it was Bill who was quick to offer aid.

He said: “When I read about Kenneth, I just thought it was terrible and no-one should be living like this in this day and age.

“After speaking with Angela I just went out and bought the ramp, went to the house, moved the railings and fitted it. It was the least I could do. It was a surprise for Kenneth. When I saw Kenneth going up and down it in his wheelchair, it was just brilliant.”

Since the Advertiser ran Kenneth’s story, Angela is hopeful that after further meetings with South Lanarkshire Council she will now be able to secure long-term suitable accommodation for her son.

However having the ramp will make a huge difference to Kenneth’s quality of life and she said: “Kenneth is over the moon since it was put in place.

“Bill came and fitted the temporary ramp really quickly and we can’t thank him enough.”
