David Livingstone pupils learn all about a healthy lifestyle

-

Pupils at David Livingstone Memorial Primary have been learning all about the importance of health, as well as the dangers of ‘airbrushed’ material.

The youngsters in primary six and seven took part in a healthy eating and body image workshop in partnership with Vivian Maeda, a programme manager for Education Scotland’s Food for Thought programme, and Karen Mackay, business partner and creator of the commercial board game Food, Mood and Health.

The purpose of these workshops was to help children understand what it means to be healthy and also to raise their awareness of how published material, such as magazines or social media tools, use airbrushing to enhance people’s images so that everyone appears flawless.

This puts a lot of pressure on young people who then feel that they need to look the same.

Anthony Clemente, primary six and seven class teacher, said:“the message associated with the worksheet was really pertinent for all the children.

“I am sure that they will now look at the things that they see on social media with a different filter as they now realise that everything is not always as it seems.”

Along with Vivian and Karen, four parent helpers assisted with the workshops and were thanked by the school for their help.

Linda Callender, school head teacher, said:“we are really grateful for all that the parent helpers do to support the school.”
