Brothers in arms

-

There was success for Blantyre’s Priestfield Boxing Club at the Scottish Intermediate Boxing Championships.

A pair of their boxers reached the finals of the competition, which was held at Ravenscraig.

Teenager Cobe Sweeney and his brother Luka, of Whitehill, Hamilton, won gold and silver medals respectively.

The 17-year-old won his 60kg (2001 class) clash by unanimous decision, against James Grover from Lochend Boxing Club, Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, Luka (12) boxed Lewis Wardrobe from Springhill Boxing Club, Shotts, in the 34kg (2006 class) bout, but was outpointed in his final to take home the silver.

Priestfield coach Terry Mchugh told the Advertiser: “It was a great performance from both of the brothers, they put so much time and effort into their training and it was great to see them get something back.

“Cobe was terrific in the final against a very game and tough opponent from Lochend, and he boxed well behind his jab for all three rounds and was a worthy winner.

“Luka also boxed well against a very talented Lewis Wardrobe from Shotts, unfortunately he missed gold this time round.

“The gym is going from strength to strength and we now have 24 registered boxers, with a junior section that has a waiting list, and we are looking forward now to the Western District Championships in February.”

Priestfield recently opened the doors to a new, fully-equipped premises in the town.

Formerly based at Blantyre Industrial Estate, the club are now at 25 Knightwood Terrace in the town, at the former TMS site, close to Blantyre Railway Station.
