Mini railway on track to celebrate 70 years

Strathaven’s Miniature Railway is going on tour!

Celebratin­g 70 years in operation in Strathaven’s George Allan Park, the popular attraction is heading to Hamilton.

To mark this anniversar­y the railway and the locomotive “Margaret”, there will be special events held throughout the year to mark this occasion.

The first event will take place at the Low Parks Museum, in Hamilton, over the weekend of April 6 and 7 in quadrangle of the museum.

A spokespers­on for the railway said: “We will exhibit some of our locomotive­s and give a ride to children on a specially laid portable track.

“Later in the year we will have two /three events still to be arranged in the park for this anniversar­y.”

The Strathaven Model Society, of the who operate the railway, will have on sale over the year pin badges and a 32-page history of the railway booklet.

The spokespers­on added: “We look forward to seeing you in the park to help us celebrate this landmark year.” However, visitors keen to get a ride on one of the model trains can head along to the park this March.

The first running day of 2019 will be Saturday, March 30, and all weekends thererafte­r till late September – weather permitting.

The railway has been one of the park’s most recognisab­le features since 1949 – and the group has 40 active members.

In a good year the park can see the railway having 12,000 passengers.

From 1949 until 2018 there has been over 695,034 passengers.
