LEAP into action with some friends

-

The LEAP Hands-on Project are looking to set up a new befriending group in Uddingston.

It will be operated by South Lanarkshire charity LEAP – Lightburn Elderly Association Project – which provides practical assistance to people aged over 50.

They recently expanded into the area and aim to help combat loneliness, isolation and help people feel safer in their own homes.

And with a successful group currently operating in Hamilton, the service now want to form a befriending group in Uddingston at the Simpson Court Sheltered Housing Complex, for both residents and other members of the public.

Already they have organised a successful movie evening, where a host of people came together to watch Mamma Mia and enjoy each other’s company, as well as organising a fun coffee and cake event.

Service user Margaret Murphy was introduced to LEAP three years ago after the death of her husband Drew, and encourages others to get involved.

Margaret, who has lived at Simpson Court for the last year, explained: “LEAP is a fantastic charity who help combat the loneliness and isolation that people can feel upon the loss of a loved one.

“They have done wonders for me, and my volunteer befriender, Liz Nelson, has been great, just popping in and having a coffee and a chat but also by introducing me to the befriending club.

“It’s nice to just sit with others in an informal setting and talk away, as opposed to being stuck in the house all day and night – especially in these darker nights and bad weather.”

The friendship group takes place in the sheltered housing complex, but people who live outwith them can join too.

Meanwhile, LEAP are also on the lookout for new volunteers to help their befriending and handyperson services.

LEAP currently has over 180 volunteers working across South Lanarkshire, and those interested in lending their support can volunteer as little as one hour every week.

Full training is provided and out-ofpocket expenses, such as travel costs, are paid to all volunteers.

Volunteers are matched with those using the befriending services based on similar interests, while the handyperson project is designed to assist those who are not able to carry out odd jobs around the home, such as changing light bulbs and building furniture.
