Getting started at Hamilton Rugby Club couldn’t be easier – and development officer Steven Meenagh says you would struggle to get involved with a friendlier institution.
They take pretty much anybody, regardless of experience, sporting prowess or age.
Everything else can be coached if necessary, and those who want to get involved at the club don’t even need to be players.
Steven said: “Hamilton are really good in that you can just jump on their website, you can find them on Twitter, but if you’re a parent wanting to get involved just phone the club and they will put you straight in contact with me.
“If you’re a junior player with a flier you will have all the details, but just walk in and ask.
“The good thing about the club is that everyone’s friendly and it doesn’t matter what level you’re at – and I think that even goes for seniors.
“If you’re someone who has watched the Six Nations all your days, you’re now in your late 20s and you’re thinking ‘I want to try rugby’ and it can be quite daunting. However, a club like this has a third XV, a second XV and a pathway that even if you come in late, you can develop and grow and push on to hit whatever level you need to hit.
“It’s really easy to get in contact with the main club website. With my email we will get back to you as soon as we can to get you down and playing.
“The same applies if it’s not the playing side that you want to get involved with.
“We have people here who do a load of work, who have never played rugby and might never play rugby, but do a power of work to maintains things.
“Handing out soup and pies on a Saturday, doing the dishes, helping with functions. You get that experience and support and I think probably the easiest way to get involved in that is to contact the club.
“We have a website, Twitter, Facebook, all the ways that everyone communicates now and you can just get involved.”
Steven says maintaining that friendly, welcoming image is important, both in the town and for staff.
He said: “I’ve been in a few primary schools and I think it’s probably the first time I’ve said something like ‘Have you heard of Hamilton Rugby Club?’ the answer is ‘yes’ and all these hands go up.
“At other schools I’ve been at I’ve asked about Cartha or Cambuslang, and maybe one wee kid plays there, but everyone else is asking what a Cartha is.
“Here, you talk about Hamilton Rugby Club and everyone knows where it is. Whether that’s because they’ve come down here for a birthday party, to watch or play rugby, for a primary school festival, it’s really important to keep that image alive.
“People know they’re sending their kids to a club where they know they’ll be taken care of, or want to volunteer because you see how well the club are doing. The image of the club has to stay there and not just in Hamilton.” comes into it – they just don’t want to go out on a cold morning anymore – so we need to make sure we’re backing up that next level of kids coming through, and
