Pupils are talk of the town

-

These pupils can certainly talk themselves up after competing in a public speaking competition

They took part in the inaugural Morrison Cup which was held at St John Ogilvie High and featured 16 youngsters.

The competition was open to four high schools in the area, and it is held in honour of Eddie Morrison, former head teacher at St John Ogilvie.

Lorna Lawson, head teacher at St John Ogilvie, said:“with such enthusiasm and wonderful talent for public speaking, we are sure that this event will become a highlight on the calendar for all of the Hamilton area schools in future years.

“The levels of commitment, engagement and most importantly, enjoyment were tangible throughout the night. There was a truly electric and family atmosphere in the room.”

The judges were Graeme Sives, head teacher of Hamilton Grammar; Pauline Campbell, depute head teacher of Calderside Academy; Carla Fagan, head teacher at Holy Cross High; and Sarah Mcnicol, English teacher at St John Ogilvie.

First place was awarded to Rebecca Granger of Hamilton Grammar, second place went to Orla Halligan of St John Ogilvie High and third place was awarded to Emilia Faulkiner of Hamilton Grammar.

Mrs Lawson added:“the standard of performance was a fitting tribute to Mr Morrison’s public speaking legacy. Public speaking was an area of pupil development that Mr Morrison coveted and promoted throughout his time in education.

“Many thanks go to Rowan Martin of the English department for helping to organise such an enjoyable evening.”
