Uniform approach at Hamilton secondary Pop-up shop will help to close the attainment gap

-

Parents and pupils at St John Ogilvie High have been donating their pre-loved uniforms to the school’s recycling programme.

The secondary now has a large stock of uniforms that are laundered and ready for a pop-up shop which will be held on Wednesday, August 7, from 10am to 2pm.

As well as used items, all of which are in great condition and can be taken away free of charge, the school has a selection of brand new items which will be offered at a significantly reduced cost.

And Sharon Gilmour, from Carabella Hair Salon in East Kilbride, has volunteered her time to offer free ‘back to school’ haircuts for St John Ogilvie pupils on the same day. No booking is required.

Pop-up shop organiser and pupil support teacher Lee Adkins explained: “The popup shop is one way in which the staff at St John Ogilvie High School are attempting to close the attainment gap.

“Wearing a full school uniform instils a sense of community and pride as well as an ethos of equality.

“When pupils think they are going to be judged on what they are wearing, they often stop attending school altogether.

“When pupils don’t attend, they miss out on learning opportunities which can have a detrimental effect on their prospects beyond school.

“It is hoped that the school’s uniform recycling programme will help to break this cycle.

“With the current publicity being given to recycling and being eco-friendly, the school’s uniform recycling programme is also going some way to saving the planet.”

The pop-up shop will be held in the school on Wednesday, August 7.
