Perri makes history

-

Hamilton’s Perri Mccluskey was part of a crew that won Strathclyde Park Rowing Club’s first ever Henley Women’s Regatta title, breaking a course record on the way.

Perri, 20, of the British Rowing World Class Start programme and her crew-mates from Nottingham RC led their time trial of the Aspirational Quadruple Sculls and then went on to convincingly win all four of their head-to-head races over the weekend at Henley-upon-thames.

Not only did Perri and her teammates get their names etched into history on The Chairman’s Trophy, but they also broke the course record by three seconds.

Several other members of SPRC participated, with Olivia Bell, 18, also part of the World Class Start Programme, competing in the highly-competitive Junior Quadruple Sculls event as part of a Scottish composite crew.

That crew qualified for the knockout stages of the regatta, drawing a seeded crew from Lea RC in the first round.

The feisty junior crew chased their opponents down the length of the course, only for the umpire to call an immediate re-row due to obstructive steering from the London crew.

Despite leading at several points throughout the race, Olivia and her crew fell just short at the finish line of the re-row.

Some club alumnae also took part in the regatta, with Hamilton’s Rosie Payne, 19, making the semi-final of the Aspirational Double Scull, racing for her current club Robert Gordon BC, who lost out to a composite crew from Leicester RC and Shiplake Crew, who were eventual winners.

Jenny Ord, 20, also from Hamilton, competed in the Lightweight Aspirational Single Scull for current club Aberdeen BC, and she stormed to third place in what is always a hotly-contested time trial.

However, she was a few feet short of victory in the quarter-finals against her opponent from Oxford University.

Strathclyde Park Rowing Club takes pride in accommodating and supporting members across all of its squads, from complete beginners through to the junior and senior sections of the club, recreational groups and all the way through to members of the World Class Start Programme, who hope one day to compete at Olympic Games.
