Robbo: We were patient

-

Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson was pleased to get his Betfred Cup Group E campaign off to a flier with a 3-0 win at Queen of the South.

Late goals by summer recruits Sherwin Seedorf and Jermaine Hylton added to a penalty by Liam Donnelly, as they comfortably saw off the Championship side.

Robinson said:“it’s a pleasing result as it’s a very difficult place to come to.

“A hot day and an astroturf pitch isn’t great, so it was a really difficult surface to play on.

“They made it very difficult for us in the first half, and probably had the better of the chances.

“We weren’t patient enough, but in the second half I thought we were excellent at times.

“Both of the new boys (Hylton and Seedorf ) need a wee bit more fitnesswise, Devante Cole got another 60 minutes, Christian Ilic is just in the door, but he got 60 minutes.

“They didn’t light up the place, but they need to learn to be patient; we don’t need to go straight at their defence.”

Motherwell broke the deadlock in 71 minutes when Hylton was felled inside the box and Donnelly fired home the penalty.

The Premiership side then bagged two goals in the closing minutes as first Seedorf burst in from the left and smashed a shot into the net for his first professional goal, and two minutes into stoppage time Hylton made room for himself and fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner from 25 yards.

Motherwell now take on Greenock Morton in their first competitive home game of the new season, and Seedorf hopes to get on the score-sheet again.

He said:“it’s the greatest feeling to get my first professional goal. We pressed the life out of them and it was a perfect moment for me with the fans shouting my name.

“You want to make the fans happy and it’s just the best feeling ever.”
