Schoolgirl helps Syrian refugees

-

A kind-hearted Laighstonhall schoolgirl raised cash for a Syrian refugee family she befriended.

Myla Burns, 9, organised a cake and candy sale at her school and gathered an impressive £180 for her friends.

The young St Elizabeth’s Primary pupil enlisted the help of her classmates and their parents to provide goodies for the sale at the Eddlewood school.

Proud mum Anna Creechan said: “It all started when Myla began asking me questions about refugees.

“She was asking where they came from and why they had to leave their country to come here.

“I explained about the war raging in their homeland and that they moved here for a safer and better life.”

Myla then started trying to write to the Syrian family in their own language.

Anna, 34, added: “She tried to say welcome and tell them her name.”

The primary five/six pupil then spoke with Mrs Wilson, her class teacher at St Elizabeth’s, and asked if she could do something for them.

She was then given permission to hold the cake and candy sale and set about gathering stuff to sell.

The school’s head teacher Christine Mcphee was delighted with Myla and everyone involved in the fundraiser.

She sent a letter to the refugee family explaining how Myla was so moved by their plight that she felt she had to do something to help.

Mum Anna proud of her.

“It was a terrific effort for someone so young to have such understanding and compassion for her friends.

“It was really quite touching and everyone congratulated her on doing such a nice thing for other people.”

She added: “She’s that kind of wee girl – always thinking of ways to help.”

The school sent the Syrian family a voucher from everyone at St Elizabeth’s for the money raised, to spend as they wish. added: “I’m so
