Kids enjoy boxing classes
Children from Reach Lanarkshire Autism have been enjoying weekly summer training camp sessions at a Bellshill boxing gym.
A group of 10 youngsters, who have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), attend the Fighting Scots Gym for a fun fitness programme, led by gym owner Francis Gilluley.
Included in the training camp is a fitness class, obstacle course, boxing sessions in the ring and a stint on the exercise bikes.
The session is an hour long and is based on a six-week pilot, with the intention of extending this to a regular weekly basis with the children’s parents very keen to maintain the sessions.
Pauline Pew, activity coordinator with Hamilton-based Reach Lanarkshire Autism told the Advertiser:“my role is to deliver social activities for children and their siblings in South Lanarkshire and to expand in the North Lanarkshire region.
“Thanks to help from (gym owner) Francis Gilluley we have been able to work together to deliver this six-week fitness camp for the children and they have loved every minute of it.
“The kids have engaged in all aspects of the camp and Francis and his team at the gym have been brilliant with the children offering them constant support, encouragement and praise.
“The parents have also loved the summer camp and are very keen to expand the service to become a permanent fixture for the children. So watch this space!”
The charity was established in March 2012 to bridge the gap in post diagnostic services across Lanarkshire, to provide emotional and practical support and guidance to individuals and families living with an ASD and raise awareness within the home and the local and wider community.
This year they have been nominated for VASLAN’S third sector award for Organisation of the Year. Visit www. reachautism.org.uk.
