Hundreds take part in Let’s Walk About Suicide gathering

-

Crowds gathered at Strathclyde Park last weekend to raise awareness of suicide.

The charity FAMS (Families and Friends Affected by Murder and Suicide) were behind the family day and were delighted with the turnout.

More than 700 people took part in the Let’s Walk About Suicide event.

FAMS co-founder Ann Marie Cocozza said:“it was a fantastic day and the weather this year was most definitely on our side. We were delighted to see so many people turn out and support the work of FAMS and raise awareness of the epidemic of suicide in this country.

“Suicide is a family affair. Its ripple affect can touch all members of a family, irrespective of age. This event was a legacy to loved ones who have been lost to suicide.

“It was also an appreciation to the thousands of people in Scotland who live with suicidal thoughts or behaviours every day, and are still standing.

“Thank you to everyone who took part and helped out.”

This year’s walk was the fourth annual event organised by FAMS, however organisers say it could well be the last due to the increase of costs each year.

Ann Marie added:“year on year the walk just keeps on getting bigger and bigger with more and people coming along on the day.

“As people may not be aware, the entire event is always free but this has led to substantially more costs now that so many people are coming along.

“It is a huge event in this area now so we will do all we can to save it, but we cannot be 100 per cent certain at this point.”

The charity’s vision is to raise awareness of the impact of failed and completed suicides, on families and communities, to as many people as possible, particularly young adults.

They also aim to bring hope and choices to all and remove the stigma of mental ill health.
