Charity golf day ‘putts’ cash into Marie Curie coffers

Event remembered Harry Hood

-

Thousands of pounds were raised for Marie Curie last weekend in honour of Celtic legend Harry Hood, who passed away earlier this year.

Dalziel Park Hotel, in Motherwell, hosted the inaugural Harry Hood Golf Tournament on Sunday, August 18, with all proceeds going to the charity.

The successful charity event was staged at Dalziel Park, which was one of many businesses owned by Harry.

Other award-winning restaurants and bars throughout Lanarkshire that he owned included Angels in Uddingston and The Parkville in Blantyre.

And over 60 players took part in the charity event, with Angels taking on The Parkville and Dalziel Park.

After two rounds, The Parkville and Dalziel Park were the winners while the best four-ball team were from Dalziel Park.

There was also a ‘beat the pro’ where the golfers took on course professional Stephen Mcconnell to get the nearest pin.

Golfers paid £10 and if they won they doubled their cash. The professional was beaten three time and each player donated their winnings.

Following the event there was a presentation dinner hosted by John Mcelvey who also conducted an auction with some great prizes.

Harry Hood’s wife, Kathleen, said some words of welcome and all of Harry’s family attended.

A spokesperson for the Lisini group, which owns the hotels, said: “The generosity of all who took part was remarkable and a touching tribute to Harry. We have raised almost £6000 from the event which is amazing.”

The event was set up to raise cash for a charity which helped Harry himself throughout his battle with the disease.

Harry, of Bothwell, was a devoted family man and a giant in the licensing trade.

The 74-year-old died peacefully at his home on Sunday, May 26, after a hardfought battle against cancer.

He was a beloved husband to Kathleen, loving father to Lisa, Siobhan and Nicholas and grandfather to five.

Harry enjoyed a glittering football career, playing for Celtic between 1969 and 1976.

Harry scored a famous hat-trick against Rangers in 1973, a feat no Celtic player managed again until 2016.

Over the years, Harry raised thousands of pounds for the Beatson Cancer Charity, who helped care for him throughout his illness.

Just last year Harry made an emotional presentation to those who cared for him, handing over a cheque for £50,000.

The majority of the fundraising was done by the staff at Dalziel Park Hotel in Motherwell.

There were also great contributions made by Angels Hotel, the Parkville and the Castle Rooms in Uddingston.
