Hamilten is a big winner

-

The heat was on at the weekend – but Hamilton’s second annual 10k certainly didn’t disappoint.

Hundreds of runners battled through the sweltering weather to record some terrific times.

And families also had some fun in the sun as they supported their loved ones who were taking part in the Hamilten 10k.

The massive event was organised by Hamilton Business Improvement District (BID), in partnership with the Advertiser and South Lanarkshire Leisure & Culture.

And BID manager Gareth Walker said: “We’d like to thank everyone for taking part in this year’s Hamilten.

“Our intention was to build on the previous year’s event – to stage a familyfriendly run that would appeal to experienced and novice runners alike, and to encourage people to visit the town and enjoy what Hamilton has to offer.

“Finally, a thank you to all who helped to deliver Hamilten – the runners, their supporters, the organisers, the marshals and all.”

The event got underway at around 10am. Following a route from the town’s Castle Street, the runners were cheered on as they ran the course, into Strathclyde Park and back, in the September sun. However, the 22 degree heat didn’t put off the runners, with many finishing in top times.

Kevan Harvey, of Cambuslang Harriers, was the first male to finish the 10k route, with a time of 31 minutes and 56 seconds.

And Karen Kennedy, representing PH Racing Club, was the first female, crossing the line in 36 minutes and 58 seconds.

There were also plenty of street entertainers to keep spectators amused as they awaited the runners finishing the course.

Hamilton Advertiser editor Robert Mitchell, who ran the course for a second year, said: “Congratulations to the team from Hamilton BID for organising another terrific event that showcased the town. Both the runners and spectators had an amazing time and hopefully Hamilten will go from strength to strength.”
