Yet another stamp of success

Lanarkshir­e Philatelic Society welcomed guests from the capital last week.

Edinburgh Philatelic Society were in town for the night at Hamilton’s Caledonian Bowling Club.

First up, everyone enjoyed a display on‘the first 15 years of independen­t postal administra­tion of Jersey’from Billtorran­ce.

Sid Morgan had a display on‘birds of the World’where he presented countries in alphabetic­al order, showing stamps of birds that were native to each one.

Next up was a theme about‘stars and Strips’from Mike Humphries. The stars included things such as the signs of the zodiac, astronomy and the sun; and stamps that were presented in strip form featured tourist sights, historic forts of Canada and West Berlin.

The final display was given by Bill Black who spoke of an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean – Norfolk Island.

He began with its discovery by Captain Cook in 1774 and continued through to the modern day.

Maureen Mathieson led members in giving warm thanks to all four guests for presenting such“diverse and very informativ­e and interestin­g displays”.

The next meeting will be at 7.30pm in the Caledonian Bowling Club, Motherwell Road, Hamilton, on Friday, October 4. David Haig, will present his display of‘a Marine Theme’.

Anyone with an interest in stamps, postal history or postcards is welcome to attend.
