Biggar head back up National League 1 table

-

Biggar bounced up four places to fourth in Tennent’s National League 1 after a good 62-15 win at home to Ayr.

It also did their points differential no harm, sitting as it does at +81.

Biggar took the lead when, after a series of phases, Conor Lavery dropped a neat goal from some 35 metres out for a 3-0 lead.

A period of pressure resulted in Ayr taking the lead when Andy Morrison found Harry Lynch for an unconverted try.

Biggar went back in front, however, when Lavery sent a crossfield kick to Ross Bradford, with the ball conveniently bouncing up and into the hands of Robbie Orr, who nipped over for the try, with Lavery converting for a 10-5 lead.

Ayr made a mess of the restart and Biggar were back on the attack immediately, with Orr again scoring, and got their bonus point when Ross Jackson and Luhann Kutze combined to set up Lavery for his first try of the season, which he converted for a 22-5 lead.

A no-hands tackle by Biggar prop Jamie Bassett gave Jamie Bova the chance to add to Ayr’s tally for 22-8.

Ayr prop Declan Bryce picked up an arm injury at the next scrum, their second front-row forward to be injured, meaning scrums were then uncontested.

Biggar got their fifth try, and Orr’s hat-trick, when he ran in from 40 metres, with Lavery’s conversion taking the interval score to 36-8.

Biggar started the second half in much the same vein, with Mark Bertram scoring in the corner and it looked very much like that was it in the bag.

That led to a scrappy period of play, and Ayr profited by bagging their second try through James Pinkerton, with Bova converting.

Another error from the restart saw Ayr immediately back under pressure and Alan Warnock was next to score for Biggar, following good play by Jackson and Craig Borthwick, with Lavery kicking the conversion for 48-15.

A diving ‘save’ by Warnock as ball was tapped back was the prelude to Biggar’s next score, as Kutze sold the defence an outrageous dummy before skipping in under the posts, with Lavery converting for 55-15.

Ayr’s Craig Doolan was then yellow carded and Lavery turned provider for Bertram to score his second of the game, with Conor adding the points for the final 6215 scoreline.
