United make a point against leaders

-

Thorniewood United were the only county side out of three to take a point in West League 2.

The Viewpark side managed a very creditable 1-1 draw at home to league leaders Vale of Leven, but Forth Wanderers lost 1-0 at home to Ashfield, while Newmains crashed 4-0 at Muirkirk.

None of the three have made any movement in the table, with Thorniewood seventh on 13 points from eight games.

Forth are fourth with 18 points from 10 games, and are five points behind Leven, while Newmains remain 13th with just four points from eight games.

Scott Arthur netted for Leven from the spot after 30 minutes, and an improved secondhalf performance from Thorniewood saw them draw level through Declan Brown with 10 minutes to go.

Colin Leverage bagged a first-half goal to down Forth.

At Muirkirk, a first-half brace from Gavin Hay sandwiched an effort from winger Lennon Wight-muirhead to put the hosts on easy street.

It was one-way traffic after the break but Muirkirk had just the one goal to show for their efforts, with Nick Aitchison on target.

Newmains have brought William Mcglone and Darren Hunter back to the club in a double signing that they feel shows intent.

The club’s start to the season has been blighted by a huge number of call-offs every week, and co-manager Craig Gupwell said: “We feel we have managed to bring in some much-needed quality.

“Both William and Darren have played under us previously and we know the type of guys we are getting.”

On the 4-0 defeat, Gupwell said: “Too many boys were there in person but didn’t really turn up and show what they are capable of.

“We were soft all over the park and simply bullied by a stronger and more organised team.”
