HELP US SAVE THE MAUSOLEUM
Landmark must be protected
Hamilton Mausoleum is in urgent need of repair and we are calling on our readers to help safeguard the future of this landmark. More than £375,000 is needed to stop water damage that is penetrating the iconic dome.
And this week we are joining forces with the Save the Hamilton Mausoleum Trust, who are campaigning for action, before the cost of repairs spirals out of control.
Hamilton Mausoleum is in urgent need of £375,000 for repairs.
The iconic building is slipping into disrepair and a group of campaigners are fighting to save the historic landmark from deteriorating any further.
And now Save the Hamilton Mausoleum Trust are urging others to join their campaign to preserve the structure.
Bob Reid, a member of the trust, said: “This newly-formed trust has been established to highlight the need for urgent repairs to this outstanding historical building.
“It was created by the 10th Duke of Hamilton and took 15 years to complete.
“The aim of the group is to work with others in saving and championing Hamilton Mausoleum and the keeper’s house through seeking to establish working partnerships with other groups, agencies and South Lanarkshire Council to hopefully increase the mausoleum’s prominence in the landscape of Hamilton.”
A number of people from all over the world have already signed up to join the trust.
Bob, a former Strathclyde Park ranger who conducted tours at the mausoleum many years ago, said: “This building belongs to the people of Hamilton and Lanarkshire and is of national importance.
“Early members are already signing up from Hamilton in Canada and the USA but we need more people from our own town to join together to help us work with South Lanarkshire Council to help save our mausoleum and its associated keeper’s house.
“The longer these repairs go on, the bill will be pushed up but this is something we can all work together on to help.
“We are keen to work with various groups and the council. We know it’s a lot of money, but perhaps if we can establish a working trust we can help find the funds.”
The trust have highlighted the need for the repairs to South Lanarkshire Council, whose head of facilities, waste and grounds services Alistair Mckinnon said: “We are aware of this move by members of the local community. South Lanarkshire Council has close and successful working relationships with various community groups interested in maintaining and protecting local heritage sites.
“Hamilton Mausoleum is a unique building of international importance and an important and valuable community asset. It is regularly opened to the public for tours and for special events, which in recent years have included concerts, recording sessions and art installations.
“We are committed to doing all we can to protect and preserve Hamilton Mausoleum for the benefit of current and future generations.”
