Road review following the death of schoolgirl Abbie

-

A safety review into a Motherwell street following the tragic death of a 12-year-old girl has got underway.

Residents are being asked to consider a range of options to improve road safety at The Loaning in the wake of the death of Abbie Mclaren in February.

The Dalziel High pupil was hit by a speeding driver, from Hamilton, after getting off a bus.

More than 12,000 people signed a petition demanding traffic control measures in the wake of Abbie’s death.

North Lanarkshire Council’s deputy leader Paul Kelly said: “Following the initial consultation events and online survey held over the summer, AECOM and our road safety team have developed a series of options to be considered by the local community.

“The feedback and issues raised by local people were vital in shaping these latest proposals for improved traffic management and pedestrian facilities, in addition to those identified through site review and collision analysis.

“This is a community-led project, so we would like to encourage everyone to get involved and provide feedback on the proposals.”

In July, speeding driver Martin Mcguire, of Hamilton, was jailed for five years for killing Abbie.

The 39-year-old was driving at 51mph in a 30mph zone when he hit the schoolgirl, while Abbie’s dad was a passenger in the car.

Mcguire admitted causing Abbie’s death by dangerous driving, and also driving without a licence or insurance.

Residents and road users can view and discuss the plans at a drop in session at the Pat Cullinan Community Centre today (Thursday, October 10) between 1pm and 4pm.

Andrew Diansangu from consultants AECOM added: “In collaboration with North Lanarkshire Council, we are working to address the issues raised by the local community. To ensure we meet the needs of local people in Scotland, AECOM will continue to work with its’ partners to ensure road safety is a key priority across the country.

“We’ll be available to discuss the proposals in person at our community events and have set up an online survey for those unable to attend.”

People can also complete the online consultation until Friday, October 25, at www. northlanarkshire.gov.uk/ theloaning
